So another lovely bank holiday weekend coming up, what are your plans?

My little man turns 4 this weekend so I thought I’d take him for a fun photoshoot whilst the bluebells are out 🙂 I have taken a bluebells photo of him every year so thought I’d share a few little tips with you for photographing children in the spring!

Tip 1: Destination anywhere. Think about your location, what are you trying to achieve? As a pro photographer I always plan my shoots in advance thinking about what shots I want to capture, what poses and most importantly where am I going to take these photos. I spend days sourcing the best location to take my clients and for Bluebells my all-time favourite location is Winkworth Arboretum.

Tip 2: Get Down. That’s right, get down to their level – yes I get muddy knees and a wet bottom on occasion but it’s the best way to get the best angle on children. If you are really getting into it get right down on your tummy – how low can you go?!

Tip 3: Don’t blame it on the sunshine. Or do… most people think a nice sunny day is the best conditions for photos, it’s not, it creates harsh shadows, squinty eyes and highlights all flaws, I love bright but overcast days to give my photos a lovely soft feeling. If the sun is shining away try to shoot early morning or dusk for the best results – if this is not possible, seek some shade to photograph in.

Tip 4: Dress for success. Avoid black or white tops as most small camera will struggle with the extreme dark or light and either over or under expose your photos to compensate. Think about colours that both suit your child and compliment the environment you are shooting it! The right outfit can change a good photo into a great photo.

Tip 5: Girls just wanna have fun. (and boys do too) it’s not all about the photos, encourage your kids to play and have fun on your shoot to get the most out of them. When they are having the most fun is when you will get the best photos.
